Hei Tiki

The traditional hei tiki is given a modern treatment representing the continuity from the language of the ancestors to the language of today. The use of colour in the arero is an acknowledgement of Te Ataarangi and the colourful rākau – small coloured sticks - that have guided the teaching of te Reo Māori throughout the country since 1972 when Kāterina Mataira developed this teaching methodology. The many colours represent diversity, the many peoples of Aotearoa. Te Reo Māori is for all of New Zealand and for all New Zealanders. These colours are friendly, happy, accessible.
